The Scale of the Challenge

The numbers are sobering. To limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels — the target set by the Paris Agreement — global energy-related CO₂ emissions need to reach net zero by around 2050. That requires a fundamental transformation of the global energy system within a single generation.

Renewable energy capacity is growing rapidly. Solar and wind power are now the cheapest sources of new electricity generation in most of the world. Electric vehicle sales are accelerating. Energy efficiency is improving across buildings, industry, and transport.

But fossil fuels still account for approximately 80% of global primary energy consumption. The transition will take decades, not years, and will require massive investment in new infrastructure, technology, and supply chains.

The Role of Natural Gas in the Transition

Natural gas occupies a complex position in the energy transition narrative. On one hand, it produces significantly less CO₂ per unit of energy than coal, making it a useful "bridge fuel" for replacing coal in power generation and industrial applications. On the other hand, methane — the primary component of natural gas — is a potent greenhouse gas, and leakage from gas infrastructure can offset much of the climate benefit of switching from coal.

The long-term role of natural gas in a net-zero energy system remains contested. Some scenarios see it declining sharply by 2040; others see continued demand, particularly in industrial applications where electrification is difficult and in regions where energy security considerations limit the pace of transition.

Petroleum Products in a Transitioning World

Liquid petroleum products face a more complex transition trajectory than natural gas. Demand for transport fuels — petrol, diesel, jet fuel — is expected to peak and then decline as electric vehicles penetrate the passenger car and light commercial vehicle markets. But demand for petrochemicals, lubricants, and heavy fuel oil for shipping and industrial applications is more resilient.

The International Energy Agency's net-zero scenario projects that global oil demand falls from around 100 million barrels per day today to approximately 24 million barrels per day by 2050. Even in this scenario, oil remains a significant part of the energy mix for decades.

In the medium term, we expect to see growing demand for lower-carbon petroleum products — HVO, sustainable aviation fuel, low-sulphur marine fuels — alongside conventional products. We are developing the sourcing and logistics capabilities to serve these markets.

In the long term, we are open to the possibility that our business model will need to evolve significantly. The companies that will thrive in the energy system of 2050 are those that are building the capabilities, relationships, and institutional knowledge to navigate the transition — not those that are pretending it is not happening.
